The EU – procurement and trading in the face of continued uncertainty

Traders, producers and users have grown accustomed to making important marketing and procurement decisions on the basis of incomplete information; it comes with the job. However, the EU sugar regime has perhaps never faced such uncertain times. Although it looks as if the current sugar quota regime will be extended through to 2020 this cannot be taken as a given. And no matter when the quotas are abolished, it is unclear how the market will develop until they are. Lawsuits brought by the EU’s refining industry against the European Commission muddy the waters further.
