Jindal Steel & Power has begun producing coking coal at its Tete project in Mozambique, a source with the Indian steel producer said Friday.

Jindal is planning to make the first shipments in the next few months, possibly as early as January, sources said.

Production will start at about 300,000 mt/year and ramp up to 3 million mt/year over the first two to three years. Full production of 10 million mt/year is execpted to be reached in five years.

Jindal Africa is in talks to build a steelworks and a power plant in Mozambique. The Indian steel producer's Mozambique country head Manoj Gupta was quoted in the media earlier this week as saying that the steel from this mill would be sold into the export market.
