Ukraine's coal extraction fell 0.9% year-on-year to 7.3 million mt in November from 7.37 million mt in the same month a year ago, an energy and coal industry ministry official said Tuesday, citing preliminary figures. Coal output in November was up 2.2% from October, when the country produced 7.14 million mt of coal. Output of thermal coal, which is used in power generation, fell to 5.3 million mt in November from 5.32 million mt in November 2011. Ukraine also produced about 2 million mt of coking coal, which is used in steel making, down from 2.06 million mt a year ago. In January through November, coal extraction rose 4.6% year-on-year, or 3.43 million mt, to 78.5 million mt, the official said. Thermal coal output rose 6.7% year-on-year to 55.8 million mt from 52.3 million mt, while production of coking coal fell 0.7% to 22.6 million mt from 22.77 million mt.
