Deepwater to buy 6-MW Siemens turbines for offshore Rhode Island wind farm

Deepwater Wind's project aimed at becoming the first US offshore wind farm will be powered by 6-MW turbines provided by Siemens, Deepwater officials announced Wednesday.

The turbines are the most advanced on the market, Deepwater and Siemens said, and their deployment at the 30-MW Block Island project offshore Rhode Island will be their first use in North America.

Moore said the new technology would allow Deepwater to construct fewer turbines offshore, limiting the impact on beach views and reducing maintenance costs.

Deepwater's $205 million Block Island project is expected to be in operation by the end of 2014 or beginning of 2015, with construction slated to begin by 2013, Moore said. The company has a power purchase agreement with National Grid to sell electricity from the wind farm for 24 cents/kWh at an annual increase of 3%.
