The US Environmental Protection Agency Wednesday outlined how industry can best reduce greenhouse gas emissions when the government begins regulating large-scale emitters on January 2, but said it would not prescribe the use of specific, and potentially costly fixes like carbon-capture technology. EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation Gina McCarthy said the agency's new Best Available Control Technology guidance spells out a five-step process for state air regulators and industry officials to follow when determining how to reduce GHG emissions. "This is pretty much business as usual for the BACT. There may be those who thought we would go outside the box. But this is a tool that has worked for the Clean Air Act for 30 years," McCarthy said Wednesday. EPA, via state and local clean air agencies, is set to begin regulating carbon dioxide emissions from major sources January 2. The long-awaited guidance will direct state and local regulators as they decide whether large-scale emitters are doing enough to reduce their emissions. --Tom LoBianco, tom_lobianco@platts.com Similar stories appear in Electric Power Daily See more information at http://www.platts.com/Products/electricpowerdaily
