Bangladesh, China, India, Myanmar urge joint ventures in energy sector

The 11th Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar forum has called for joint ventures in the energy sector and exploration of natural resources to ensure energy security in the region.

"Energy security has remained a major concern for all the countries of the BCIM region and there are significant opportunities for joint initiatives in investment, exploration and cross border trade in the energy sector within the region," the regional group of Asian nations said in a joint statement issued Sunday.

At a two-day meeting in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka, the participants highlighted the member countries' energy needs and the importance of developing sustainable resources in the region.

All the member countries, except Myanmar, suffer from a shortage of energy, the participants pointed out and underlined the need for bilateral cooperation in the sector.

Bangladeshi think tank Centre for Policy Dialogue organized the 11th BCIM Forum. The 12th forum will be held in Myanmar next year.

CPD Executive Director Musfafizur Rahman, Myanmar's ambassador to Dhaka Myo Myint Than, China foreign affairs Director General for Yunnan province Zhou Hong, and Indian Centre for Policy Research governing body member Eric Gonsalves participated in the forum.
