German wind power developers added a total of 793 MW of new installed capacity in the first half of 2011, 20% more than was added in the same period last year, the German BWE wind energy association said this week.

Total installed wind power capacity in Germany now stands at 27,981 MW as of June 30, the BWE said.

The lobby group estimates that Germany will add 1,800 MW of new wind capacity in 2011, bringing the total number to almost 29,000 MW by the end of the year.

"The numbers indicate that the [German] home market is recovering and will reach again the level of 2009," BWE president Hermann Albers said.

The offshore market and repowering promise the biggest growth rates for the future, he added. Germany is Europe's biggest market for wind power, followed by Spain with 21.2 GW of installed capacity, although new installations slowed in Spain in the first half of the year.
