IAEA delegation to visit Tohoku Electric's quake-hit Onagawa nuclear plant

Tokyo (Platts)--26Jul2012/536 am EDT/936 GMT

A delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency will visit Tohoku Electric's earthquake-hit Onagawa nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan from July 29 to August 11, Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said Thursday.

The purpose of their visit -- the first since the devastating March 2011 earthquake -- is to collect data on the quake's impact on the plant's structure and electric systems, the NISA said.

Twenty experts from the IAEA and various regulatory agencies from France, Germany and the US will be visiting the plant. Sujit Samaddar, the head of IAEA's International Seismic Center, will lead the delegation to the Onagawa plant, it added.

Tohoku Electric's 2.17 GW Onagawa nuclear plant was automatically shut on March 11 last year, following the earthquake and tsunami. The company has been carrying out inspections at the plant due to damages and also to assess the impact on the plant from the quake. Its other 1.1 GW Higashidori nuclear power plant was shut for scheduled maintenance when the earthquake struck, and it remains unclear when it will be allowed to restart.
