China's national electricity consumption is estimated to grow 6-8% year on year to 2.6-2.65 trillion kWh in the second half of 2012, the China Electricity Council said in a statement Tuesday, attributing the growth to an expected improvement in China's economy.

China is estimated to consume 4.98-5.03 trillion kWh of electricity in the whole year of 2012, up 6-7% year on year, according to the CEC, an industry body.

By comparison, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which is under the State Council, forecast last week that China would consume 5.1 trillion kWh of electricity this year.

Meanwhile, the CEC said China's design power generation capacity is expected to increase by about 86,000 MW, or 8.2%, year on year to 1,140 GW at the end of 2012. Of the 86,000 MW, about 50,000 MW will come from coal-fired power units and about 20,000 MW will be contributed by hydropower units, the CEC said.
