Nearly 931,000 customers across six states remained without power Tuesday afternoon, a week after Hurricane Sandy battered the eastern US, the US Department of Energy said.

The storm system brought hurricane-force winds and flooding to coastal states and more than three feet of snow to the mountainous areas of West Virginia. More than a dozen states on the East Coast and in the Midwest in the path of Sandy formally declared a state of emergency.

The storm itself brought 95 mph winds and massive damage across New Jersey and New York City.

The department said that at the peak of outages last week, more than 8.5 million customers were without power across 21 states.

Among the states affected, New Jersey, with 537,089 still without power, has the highest number of outages. New York also was hit hard, with 348,985 outages remaining, according to the DOE. The other states with customers offline included Pennsylvania with 10,074 and West Virginia with 25,598.

In Connecticut, 7,371 were still without power Tuesday afternoon and 1,666 were without power in Maryland.

Thousands of utility workers from across the country as well as more than 100 personnel from the DOE's power marketing administrations are in the region helping restore power, according to the agency.
