More US mills join steel sheet price hike

Several more US sheet producers Thursday independently followed AK Steel's price hike earlier this week.

Charlotte, North Carolina-based Nucor and Portage, Indiana-based NLMK moved up $50/st on hot-rolled, cold-rolled and hot-dipped galvanized sheet.

Tom Marchak, commercial vice president for Dearborn, Michigan-based Severstal, confirmed that the company has established new minimum base pricing of $650/st for hot-rolled; $750/st for cold-rolled; and $760/st for galvanized substrate. Other mills are expected to follow.

One mill source said buying has been "slow or sporadic" in the South, but fair to good in the Midwest due to demand from the energy sector.

"It makes a difference where you're at," the source said.

Prior to the announcements, Platts pegged HRC at $610-630/st, while CRC was assessed at $720-740/st and HDG at $785-800/st. All prices are normalized to a Midwest (Indiana) mill basis.
