White House says will move ahead with sanctions against Libya

The US will move ahead with a series of sanctions against Libya due to the violent crackdown by Moammar Qadhafi's regime against anti-government protesters, the White House announced Friday.

The sanctions will be both unilateral and multi-lateral in concert with allies and will be announced "soon," White House press secretary Jay Carney said during a televised briefing.

Carney declined to offer specifics of the sanctions under consideration.

"Some of the things we are considering doing are the things we can move quickly on," he said.

Earlier, the State Department announced that the US would suspend its embassy operations in Libya.

"Given current security conditions in Libya, coupled with our inability to guarantee fully the safety and security of our diplomatic personnel in the country, the Department of State has temporarily withdrawn embassy personnel from Tripoli and suspended all embassy operations effective February 25, 2011," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said in a statement.
