Chinese polyethylene imports in January fell across the three grades, with low density polyethylene imports falling 30.3% year on year, high density polyethylene imports falling 8.4% year on year and linear LDPE imports falling 5.4% year on year, China customs data released Saturday showed. In January 2011, China imported 106,252 mt of LDPE, 332,635 mt of HDPE and 213,330 mt of LLDPE. This was in contrast to the 152,459 mt of LDPE, 363,129 mt of HDPE and 225,562 mt of LLDPE imported in January 2010. Demand for PE in January was weak, ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays, which started in the first week of February. Many market participants were away or had stayed on the sidelines since mid-January. Compared with December, LDPE imports were up 2.1% from 104,057 mt and HDPE imports were up 9.9% from 302,619 mt. But LLDPE imports fell 14% month on month from 248,150 mt.--Kimitsu Yogachi, kimitsu_yogachi@platts.comSimilar stories appear in Polymerscan. See more information at http://bit.ly/Polymerscan
