A Liberia-registered chemical tanker was attacked by armed robbers early Sunday while the vessel was anchored close to the Malaysian island of Pulau Mungging, piracy watchdog ReCAAP said Monday. Five armed robbers with machetes and handguns boarded the 40,219 dwt MS Simon and stole two computers and engine spare parts from the ship, Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia, or ReCAAP, said in a statement. However, there were no injuries to the crew, the watchdog said. When contacted, marine services provider Inchcape, which manages the 2004-built German-owned tanker, was unable to provide more details. ReCAPP said this was the second incident to have occurred in the vicinity of Pulau Mungging this month. On February 11, the Panama-registered Jose Bright was robbed while the tanker was anchored near to the Malaysian island. ReCAPP has advised ship masters and crew to be vigilant while operating in this area. --Hengky, hengky_h@platts.comSimilar stories appear in Asian Petrochemicalscan.
