Exelon's Byron-1 1,268-MW nuclear unit shut for refueling and maintenance

Washington (Platts)--27 Feb 2017 414 pm EST/2114 GMT

Exelon Generation's 1,268-MW Byron-1 nuclear unit in Byron, Illinois, shut at 12:01 am CST (0601 GMT) Monday for a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage, a company spokeswoman said.

Dorothy Wallheimer did not say in her email the expected duration of the outage. For commercial reasons, Exelon does not disclose its outage schedules.

The average duration of refueling outages at US nuclear units in 2016 was 35.6 days, according to S&P Global Platts data.

Byron-1's main power transformers will be replaced during the outage, Exelon said in a statement Monday.

"Also planned during the outage is replacement work on eight large pumps, various electrical maintenance and upgrade projects, and more than 1,000 preventative maintenance tasks," the company said.
