Ethylene prices posted large gains in January, climbing 10% to $1,382 per metric ton (/mt), according to the just-released monthly average of the Platts Global Petrochemical Index (PGPI), a benchmark basket of seven widely used petrochemicals.

The price increase was attributed to supply tightness, caused by planned and unplanned maintenance at steam crackers, which produce ethylene.
