Capitol Crude: The US Oil Policy Podcast

State of crude by rail at a crossing in the US

Brian Scheid and Herman Wang

US crude-by-rail rules have not been updated in decades, and recent train accidents have rattled communities across North America. Platts senior editor Herman Wang takes a deep dive into efforts to revamp the rules, including from the Department of Transportation, which last summer unveiled its proposed rule, but has yet to finalize it. Meanwhile, the oil, rail and other industries have weighed in with various concerns, and Herman checks on the status of the regs and the options that the DOT could consider as it is expected to send a final rule to the White House for vetting at the end of January.

Herman also speaks with with Bentek Energy senior analyst Jenna Delaney on whether the DOT’s proposed two-year phaseout of crude oil tank cars would be feasible, given current manufacturing capacity, and how potential speed restrictions on oil trains could impact the rail network.
