Peanut butter or hamburgers: How will US crude oil be received in Europe?

January 25, 2016 (11:37 mins)

Herman Wang and Brian Scheid

Europeans have embraced many American exports, like McDonald's Big Macs and Jazzercise. Will US crude oil be the next big hit across the pond? The first cargo of freely traded US crude oil has reached European shores, with the tanker Theo T arriving in Europe last week. Is it the first of an onslaught of American crude to arrive on the old continent, or just a curious blip in a global oil market that may not be disposed to further cargoes from the US?

UK-based Platts editors Paula VanLaningham and Eklavya Gupte join Capitol Crude host Herman Wang at Platts' headquarters in Canary Wharf, London, to discuss Europe's appetite for US crude and the outlook for US exports. The market competition in Europe will be tough amid a changing refinery landscape. Will US oil have what it takes to become Europe's American Idol?

Check back every Monday for the latest analysis of US oil policy news from leading Platts editors covering the Capitol. E-mail the editors at brian.scheid@platts.com and herman.wang@platts.com.
