Allison Macfarlane, Chairman, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission
Platts reporters and other credentialed media convened to hear US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Allison Macfarlane discuss her priorities at the commission in the coming months, including: her plans to visit more regulated facilities, work on improving NRC communications, her interest in the back-end of the fuel cycle, security matters, and international cooperation efforts.
An expert on nuclear waste issues, Macfarlane holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 2010 to 2012, she served on the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future, created by the Obama administration to make recommendations about a national strategy for dealing with the nation’s high-level nuclear waste. Her research has focused on environmental policy and international security issues associated with nuclear energy.
Prior to beginning her term as the NRC’s 15th chairman, Macfarlane was an associate professor of environmental science and policy at George Mason University. Macfarlane was sworn in as chairman of the NRC July 9, 2012.
