How do we assess the price of rolled steel?

See Less   Platts: minus

Our US Hot-Rolled Coil (HRC) price assessment is an emerging US benchmark that provides a daily representation of how much rolled steel is being bought and sold in the US Hot-Rolled Coil spot market.

It is based on a standard specification of Hot-Rolled Coil with chemical and dimensional tolerances based on ASTM A 1011-06a Commercial Type B material. Other specifications of Hot-Rolled Coil are normalized back to this grade, based on prevailing market extras. It takes into account standard spot-market order sizes of up to 500 st of material 48-60 inches wide, with thicknesses ranging from 0.083-0.37 inches (other order sizes or dimensions are normalized to this standard).

Rolled Steel Coil product specifications are updated periodically to remain reflective of current market practices. The price assessment is published on an ex-works Midwest (Indiana) mill basis and the US domestic market has migrated toward greater use of this assessment as a benchmark since early 2013.
