Global air freight demand in August rises 12% on year: IATA

London (Platts)--5Oct2017/623 am EDT/1023 GMT

Global air freight demand in August rose 12.1% year on year in terms of freight tonne kilometers (FTKs), data from the International Air Transport Association showed late on Wednesday, the fifth time in six months double-digit growth has been recorded.

Freight capacity, measured in available freight tonne kilometers (AFTKs) grew by 4.7% in August, with demand growth outstripping capacity growth, a positive sign for load factors, yields and financial performance.

Global trade continued to drive strong performance in the air freight industry with world trade volumes growing 4.2% in the first seven months of 2017 year on year.

Export orders are hovering around a six-and-a-half-year high, alongside strong business confidence.

Outlook for air freight remains strong, with IATA forecasting 7.5% growth in demand for 2017.

Regionally, Africa saw the largest year-on-year increase in FTKs in August of 29.4%, with capacity up 5.9%. This growth was boosted by increasing strength on trade routes between Africa and Asia.

Europe saw an 11.8% growth in FTKs, with concerns about the strength of the euro doing little to stymie export orders out of Germany, which are currently growing at their fastest pace since 2010, according to IATA.
