Tankers: Iran NITC appoints Sardashti as new head in surprise shake-up - official

Singapore (Platts)--7Mar2018/540 am EST/1040 GMT

National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC), the largest in the Middle East, has appointed veteran commercial director Captain Nasrollah Sardashti as its new managing director, in a surprise shake-up, a company official told S&P Global Platts Tuesday.

Cyrus Kianersi, who had been at the helm of NITC since 2016, was replaced by Sardashti, a-long serving NITC official and a well-known industry figure, on Sunday, sources said late Monday.

The official did not specify what Kianersi's plans were after stepping down as managing director.

Sardashti, a popular figure in the tanker industry for his strong opinion and views, was one of the key people instrumental in piloting the tanker company through difficult times when Iran was under an EU and US embargo on imports of Iranian crude oil.

Several of its tanker companies were also placed on a list of banned entities by the EU sanctions, which came into effect on July 1, 2012.

According to industry sources, Sardashti, who helmed NITC's chartering department for over two decades, is credited with adopting smart strategies that helped move Iran's crude shipments during the sanctions.

Also well known in industry circles is the story of Sardashti surviving a deadly missile attack on a product tanker that he was sailing on during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.
