Weekly US coal carload volumes notch 2018's first slide: AAR

Houston (Platts)--14 Feb 2018 439 pm EST/2139 GMT

US coal carload volumes totaled 85,591 in the week ended February 10, down 4.5% from the previous week, the Association of American Railroads said Wednesday.

It was the first week-on-week drop in carloads counts of 2018. Volumes climbed in each of the five previous weeks but remained below year-ago counts. Cumulative volumes the first six weeks of 2018 fell 5.5%, or by about 29,000 carloads, from the same period a year ago.

Canadian railroads -- which include the US operations of Canadian National, which serves several mines in the Illinois Basin, and Canadian Pacific -- saw originations slide to 6,193 coal carloads, down 17.5% from the previous week and down 4.1% from the same week last year.

Canadian coal volumes year to date slipped 0.9% from the same 2017 period.
