Ukraine's anthracite coal stocks down 3.7% in September to 544,600 mt

Kiev (Platts)--4 Oct 2017 932 am EDT/1332 GMT

Ukraine's reserves of anthracite coal at thermal power plants fell 3.7% to 544,600 mt in the four weeks to Monday, the energy and coal industry ministry said Wednesday.

The reserves fell amid higher production by thermal power plants as several nuclear power units were offline for maintenance and refueling and despite government attempts to limit the use of anthracite to save it for the upcoming winter.

Overall reserves of coal at power plants, including anthracite and thermal coal, dropped 20.5% to 1.284 million mt during the four-week period.

Including the warehouses of regional heat and hot water producers, total reserves of coal were down 15.8% to 1.6 million mt, according to the energy and coal industry ministry.

Ukraine needs to store about 2.5 million mt of coal by October 15, including about 1 million mt of anthracite to be prepared for the six-month high-demand season, according to the ministry.

Ukraine, whose power plants had 2.14 million mt of coal in warehouses as of November 1, 2016, was forced to start importing anthracite from Russia, South Africa and the US after the country's anthracite coal mines in Donetsk and Luhansk were seized by pro-Russian separatists in February.

Half of the country's power plants use anthracite as their main fuel.

Ukraine was expected to receive about 150,000 mt of anthracite from South Africa in October, compared with 155,000 mt in September, according to power and mining group DTEK.
