ISO New England issues abnormal conditions alert

Houston (Platts)--7 Mar 2018 1223 pm EST/1723 GMT

ISO New England issued an abnormal conditions alert Wednesday morning as a winter storm blasts the region with snow and below-normal temperatures, driving up power demand.

Peakload across the grid operator's footprint is forecast to be around 17,000 MW Wednesday, up 5.8% day on day, and the highest level in a number of weeks.

Internal Hub on-peak day-ahead jumped nearly $6.75 to the mid-$30s/MWh for Wednesday delivery, the highest level in nearly a month.

The region is under a winter storm warning and winter storm watch through Thursday, with snow accumulations of up to 20 inches expected, according to the US National Weather Service.

"A surface low pressure and associated frontal system is quickly transitioning into a nor'easter and will spread snow to much of the northern Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today through the end of the week," according to the weather service.

The ISO alert is directed at power system operations, maintenance, construction and test personnel and market participants and is issued when abnormal conditions affecting the reliability of the power system exist or are anticipated.

Those entities should take precautions so routine maintenance, construction or test activities do not further jeopardize the reliability of the power system.

Any maintenance, construction or test activity that could jeopardize system reliability should be stopped and/or postponed, according to the ISO.
