Southwest Power Pool sets wind, renewable penetration record

Southwest Power Pool set record wind penetration and record renewable penetration levels in the early morning on March 31, SPP said Tuesday.

The grid operator said the wind was around 14.5 GW, or 62.13%, of the total load at 23.2 GW at 1:54 am CDT on March 31, when combined with hydro, solar and waste heat output, the renewable generation resources contributed to about 64.7% of the total load.

The wind record broke the previous one set on March 17, when wind penetration hit as high as 60.56% in early morning hours, serving about 14 GW of total load at around 23 GW.

Earlier in March, the grid operator set a wind penetration record of 58.1%.

In the real-time market, the five-minute SPP North Hub real-time locational marginal prices fell to about $2.25/MWh at 1:55 am CDT while SPP South Hub LMP dropped to negative $10/MWh.

The current all-time high wind generation was set at 15,690 MW on December 15, serving 51% of total load at that time.
