CME Group average daily metals trading volume up 34% in 2016

CME Group's metals trading volume averaged 460,000 contracts/day in 2016, up 34% from 345,000 contracts/day in 2015, the US exchange group said Wednesday.

Metals volume averaged a record 488,000 contracts/day in the fourth quarter of 2016, up 49% year on year.

For the quarter, gold futures and options average daily volume was up 51% year on year to 279,000 contracts, while silver futures and options average daily volume was up 45% to 80,000 contracts, CME said.

CME's suite of metals products includes precious metals (gold, silver, platinum and palladium), base metals (copper, aluminum, aluminum alloy, alumina, zinc and lead) and ferrous metals (iron ore, ferrous scrap, hot rolled coil and steel billet).
