First LNG cargo from Cameroon's floating LNG plant faces delay to month-end

London (Platts)--16 Apr 2018 927 am EDT/1327 GMT

The first cargo of LNG from Cameroon's floating LNG project could be delayed until the end of April after the timetable for the maiden delivery was pushed back, a spokesman for project partner Perenco said Monday.

  • Scheduled for April 22/23, but faces another week delay
  • Gazprom is sole offtaker of Cameroon LNG cargoes

Production from the 1.2 million mt/year facility -- the Hilli Episeyo -- anchored offshore the West African country has already been much delayed. First output had been expected to start in the second quarter of 2017.

Cameroon LNG was one of only two new supply projects that had been set to start up in the first half of this year -- after Cove Point in the US -- with other new production facilities due online later in 2018.

"The first cargo has slipped by a few weeks," a Perenco spokesman said. "It is now scheduled for April 22/23 but may be delayed by a further week, until the end of the month," he said.

Perenco and its partners, Cameroon's state-owned Societe Nationale des Hydrocarbures and Golar LNG, took the final investment decision on the facility in November 2015.

The FID coincided with a deal with Gazprom Marketing & Trading to buy all of the LNG to be produced from the project over its eight-year life.

Gazprom will be the sole offtaker of the project, which is based on the 500 Bcf of gas reserves from the offshore Kribi fields.

Golar in March said it had begun LNG production from the plant, with final commissioning on track for mid-April 2018.

Once it delivers its first cargo, Cameroon will join the likes of Algeria, Nigeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea and Egypt as African LNG exporters.
