Energy Podium

Senator Joni Ernst, Republican-Iowa

June 05, 2018 (39:17 mins)

Speaker:

S&P Global Platts reporters and other credentialed media convened in the Washington, DC, Platts bureau to hear US Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa describe her efforts to uphold the Renewable Fuel Standard and otherwise promote biofuels. As is traditional with the long-running Platts Energy Podium, Ernst then sat for several rounds of questions from the assembled media.

In November 2014, Ernst was elected as the first woman to serve in federal elected office from the State of Iowa and also became the first female combat veteran elected to serve in the US Senate. In Washington, Ernst serves on four Senate committees: Armed Services; Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry; Environment and Public Works; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship. Ernst received her undergraduate degree from Iowa State University where she joined the university’s ROTC program. After graduating, she joined the US Army Reserves. In 2003, Ernst served as a company commander in Kuwait and Iraq, leading 150 Iowa Army National Guardsmen during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard after 23 years of military service.
