Platts RigData: Q3 Starts Measured Growth for U.S. Land Rig Count


HOUSTON - August 03, 2017


Platts RigData, a forecasting and analytics unit of S&P Global Platts, today announced the U.S. rig count for July 2017 was 1,068, up 13 (1%) from June 2017, and up 548 (105%) from July 2016. This rig count includes U.S. onshore, U.S. inland waters, and U.S. offshore Gulf of Mexico drilling rigs.

Year to date the rig count has climbed a strong 51%, but the pace of growth has slowed from an average monthly sequential improvement of 8% in Q1 to 5% in Q2 to just 1% in the beginning of Q3.


  • July U.S. land rig count: 1,024, up 15 (1%) from the previous month and up 550 (116%) from July 2016.
  • July U.S. inland waters and Gulf of Mexico rig count: 44, down 2 (-4%) from the previous month and down 2 (-4%) from July 2016.
