Confusion over coming changes due to Chinese import restrictions is continuing to shake up global thermal coal markets, with far-reaching effects even in the European swap scene. James O'Connell, Platts editorial director for coal, explains how the spread between the Platts/Fenwei China Coal Index 1 and the CCI 8 has almost doubled since the beginning of September, and Chinese imports of Indonesian coal appear to be shifting, while Australian coal may find some reprieve from the regulations.
