US Gulf Coast 3% fuel oil price assessment change explained

With Richard Swann and Jamie McDuell

October 13, 2015 18:14:00 EST (9:27)

In 1979 Platts began assessing US Gulf Coast No. 6, 3.0% fuel oil. After months  of consultation and discussion, this widely traded benchmark grade will be renamed as USGC HSFO and also see its specifications updated with effect from January 2017. In this video, Richard Swann and Jamie McDuell outline the reasons behind the change in specifications of the assessment, from Mexico's transition to be a net exporter of fuel oil, to the growing importance of bunker demand. Richard also highlights the differential between the old and new versions of the grades, and the issues surrounding the implementation time of the changes to the grade.
